Japan resumes whale hunting in Antarctica despite world wide condemnation. Their reason is given as scientific research. Whaling is the hunting of whales and dates back to at least 6000 BC. Whaling and other threats have led to at least five of the 13 great whales being listed as endangered.[1] Commercial whaling is subject to a moratorium by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), although the moratorium is hotly contested. Whaling began in prehistoric times, and was initially confined to (near) coastal waters. Early whaling affected the development of many cultures.[citation needed] Although prehistoric hunting and gathering is generally considered to have low ecological impact, early whaling in the Arctic altered freshwater ecology.[2] The development of modern whaling techniques was spurred in the 19th century by the increase in demand for whale oil,[3] sometimes known as “train oil”, and in the 20th century by a demand for whale meat. Nantucket, Massachusetts was once the whaling capital of the world. Whale oil is used little today,[5] thus modern whaling primarily has commercial value as a food source. The primary species hunted is the minke whale, the second smallest of the baleen whales. Recent scientific surveys estimate a population of 179000 in the central and North East Atlantic and 700000 around Antarctica.[6] Dominoes made from whale bonesInternational cooperation on whaling regulation started in 1931 and a number of multi-lateral agreements now exist in

    On the average, 1 person dies every second ( every 5th second it’s a child ) directly or indirectly of starvation – 100,000 each day – 36 million each year – 58 % of all deaths. Have you ever shed a tear for one of them? Save the whales? I say put a whale in a starving kid’s belly and save the humans. Check out something called UNICEF.

    research? what research? I am training to be a biologist, and I’ve never any scientist willing to sacrifice that many animals of slow recovering species for the sake of “research”. I can only compare these people with the former unit 731 in the sino-japanese war. How insulting.

    i hear ya! i dont eat whale either! but i dont go telling others what to eat and what not to eat. some countries consider cows as sacred Gods. in their eyes beef eaters may appear as drastic and outragous as how some folks are reacting to this whale hunting…just my 2 cents! we all eat something! (btw cows and pigs are mammals too) they have emotions similar to humans. they cry tears before they get slaughtered

    @johnyRidin dude, if plants had feelings and emotions like us they wouldnt be the way they are right now. do they have a heart? no. do they have a stomach? no. do they have a brain? no. plants do not have emotions like us ok? :P yea we do take life in order to live life, but we do not need to consume all life. do we really need to take every life out there? no. whales dont need to be one of them. well for me that is. since i dont eat whale. i’m quite happy enough with chicken and beef. :)

    well, me or you have never been a plant so we probablly will not find out for sure in out lifetime.lol all i can say is we take life inorder to live life. that is the way it goes

    @johnyRidin well yea they responded but its not really “joy” like we feel it. and the ‘plants responding to music’ thing is actually kind of a myth rite now. some people have actually proven them rong. :P wat are we talking about now anyway? xD

    @EdotheHero

    there was an experiment where a scientist played some music for plants, and the plants actually responded to it! they DO feel joy!

    @johnyRidin oh and according to biology plants dont have the same central nervous system as humans do, and so they do not really feel pain the way we do, and neither joy. lol. basically they dont have human emotions.

    @johnyRidin yes but we dont need to consume every little thing on the planet. whales are more likable than cows :P haha that may sound really mean. but whales are more precious and special than cows. lol that sounds so retarded. anyway plus they’re going extinct. so yea. us humans can let some animals live right? we dont have to consume everything. however, ethics and animal rights are very difficult topics to have sides on. i’d rather not think about all this stuff; its giving me a headache. :P

    fucking cruel!!!! :( Whales arent fish! they’re mammals just like us! We can feel pain cos we have a nervous system. im sure whales feel the same thing, because without it, we’d practically lose half of our natural perception. Fucking idiots who believe tht just cos they ‘think’ whales dont feel pain, its ok to slaughter. This isnt killing, this is slaughter! murder! and fuck u Nobama6!!! ur naive and narrow minded interests is disturbing and utterly disgusting.

    The news show first starts off about humpbacks being endangered and Japan killing 1,000 whales a year. This grabs the idiots.
    You have to wait a bit to find out of the 1,000 whales only 50 are humpbacks.

    They also leave out Japanese whaling is done with full permission from the IWC and is completely legal. There are those in the AU who swear Australia is going to sue over the issue but it never happens.

    Fish dont feel pain. Stupid. Trust me, fish are stupid creatures. The whales do NOT know what is happening to them. Like you said its all purely reactionary.

  • littlemisswhat

    wow. its not like they can look back to see what is happening right? if they get harpooned, they just want to get away from it. and that is why they just keep swimming. USE YOUR BRAINS.
